I teach chair yoga classes for older adults and individuals with varying levels of mobility, strength, and cognitive ability. I currently teach in skilled nursing facilities, retirement communities, group homes, and memory care facilities.
Accessible yoga for every body
My classes are intentionally created for every body.
I work with students ranging from double amputees to those living with memory challenges such as dementia and Alzheimer’s. Every movement can be modified, simplified, or progressed so that each student can safely experience the benefits of gentle movement.
With my background in yoga and experience adapting traditional yoga poses to the chair, I make sure every single student is included and feels seen.
In my classes, no one is left out, and no one is asked to push beyond what feels appropriate for them in the moment.
A blend of styles students love!
My classes are playful and structured, with clear, simple instructions for those with cognitive or memory challenges. I often mirror the students – facing them and cueing to their rights and lefts – so that no one is frustrated in trying to keep up. Students always tell me how much they love the blend of styles I teach!
There is always something for everyone. Every single class includes a blend of the following: improving circulation, maintaining joint mobility, supporting posture, encouraging relaxation, building strength, enhancing balance – all while enjoying movement in a safe environment with fellow residents (sometimes even the nurses and care staff attend!)
Props for tactile feedback
One thing that differentiates my classes from others is that I incorporate props such as stress balls and inflatable balls. These tools help with grip strength, coordination, sensory engagement, and tactile feedback. Students light up when they see these colorful, fun props!
Above all, my classes prioritize dignity, safety, and connection. Chair yoga is exercise and a positive, therapeutic experience that everyone looks forward to.
If you’re looking for a chair yoga instructor who understands the unique needs of senior populations and provides compassionate, adaptable, and engaging classes, I would be honored to work with your community.
